July 1st

And it hurt. But mostly it made me sleepy.

I wish I had a real excuse for why I’ve ignored this blog thing for as long as I have. The excuse is that I have a job now. Since March, I’ve been working as the Sales Assistant at Kate Walker & Company, a sales agency. It’s a bit hard to explain, because we sell books to book stores, not people. And the books aren’t ours. And my personal job is sales-free. It’s been going really well, I’ve learned tons, I like it a lot, but it’s made me sleepy. The change in schedule has nearly killed me these past three months (and it doesn’t help that I’m still blogging near full-time over at my other blogs). But I’m adjusting. I’ve actually started to do things during the week! So this is an exciting development that’s inspired me to actually use this blog again.

I doubt this will last very long. And I’m still not entirely sure what to do with this blog, whether it should be personal, publishing or somewhere in between. But I’ll figure it out.

On a side note, I’m working up the courage to submit a completely unsolicited “why Kate Walker & Company needs a blog” report. We’ll see how that goes.

Oh I totally missed this post. A rather late response but I hope you’re enjoying yourself at KW :) I saw you at the KW booth at BEC but it was so busy for me that I didn’t have the chance to drop by and say hi! I’d encourage you to see how people feel about a blog — it definitely is a little different from a sales rep standpoint but off the top of my head, I think independent bookstores and the books themselves stand to benefit the most if sales reps are blogging.

oh totally! it’ll let us be more transparent with both our publisher clients and our bookstores and give them more consistent info with what’s going on with our books. (ha, this feels like my proposal!!)

right now, its a bit too crazy to launch anything (sales season!), but I’m working on a proposal–suggestions are welcome :-)

I was only at the KW booth for a couple hours in the morning–I spent most of my time at the BEC All-Stars booth being MC/tech support. It was hilarious good times.

I tried to look for you at Dundurn and failed.

Did you run into Ellen at the booth? Unfortunately I was usually away from the booth with the exceptions of a few times when I was handing out free books :)

One suggestion would be to allow the blog to be separated into regions — it’d be awesome to hear stories from reps in different regions map out/geo tag their routes while going on their sales trips.

I agree that blogs are directly related to transparency and accountability. Have you seen the new Defining Canada? :) Do let me know what you think!
